What is Hojicha?
Hojicha is a roasted green tea native to Japan, characterized by its warm, nutty aroma and reddish-brown color. Unlike other green teas, Hojicha is steamed and then roasted at high temperatures – traditionally in a cast-iron pan. This roasting process not only alters the color and flavor of the tea, but also significantly reduces its caffeine content.
Hojicha is typically made from leaves and stems from later harvests, resulting in a particularly mild and gentle tea. Roasting creates roasted aromas reminiscent of roasted nuts or caramel, which clearly distinguishes Hojicha from traditional green teas. Due to its low caffeine content, it's also easy to digest in the late afternoon or evening and is often served to children and the elderly in Japan.
Tip: Hojicha is a great low-caffeine coffee alternative.

Benefits of Hojicha
Hojicha is not only unique among green teas in terms of taste, but also offers several health benefits. The gentle roasting process reduces bitter and astringent components, making Hojicha particularly mild and gentle on the stomach. At the same time, it contains significantly less caffeine than other green teas, making it ideal for those sensitive to caffeine.
Although hojicha contains less caffeine, it still provides valuable antioxidants that can protect the body from free radicals. The catechins and polyphenols it contains have anti-inflammatory effects and strengthen the immune system. Furthermore, the warm, roasted aroma of hojicha is said to have a calming effect—a gentle companion for relaxed moments without inner turmoil.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do Hojicha and Matcha differ?
Hojicha and matcha are both Japanese green teas, but differ significantly in processing, flavor, and effects. Hojicha is roasted after steaming, giving it a mild, nutty aroma and a reddish-brown color, while matcha is a fine, bright green powder made from shaded leaves of the first harvest. Hojicha contains significantly less caffeine, making it ideal for the afternoon. Matcha, on the other hand, is rich in caffeine and provides long-lasting, gentle energy and increased concentration.
How much caffeine does Hojicha contain?
Hojicha contains very little caffeine compared to other green teas – typically about 7–20 mg of caffeine per 200 ml cup.
For comparison:
• Matcha : approximately 60-80 mg per serving
• Sencha : approximately 30-50 mg per cup
• Coffee : approx. 80–100 mg per cup
Hojicha's low caffeine content is primarily due to the use of mature tea leaves and stems, as well as the roasting process, which partially breaks down the caffeine. This makes it particularly suitable for people with caffeine sensitivity and as a low-caffeine alternative for the evening.
Why is Hojicha brown in color?
Hojicha gets its brown color from roasting the tea leaves, which breaks down the green chlorophyll pigments and creates typical roasted pigments.
Is Hojicha suitable for pregnant women?
Yes, hojicha is suitable for pregnant women due to its low caffeine content, but it should still be consumed in moderation. We still recommend consulting a doctor or midwife.
